A novel approach to Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH) lactones via the Lewis acid-promoted couplings of α,β-unsaturated lactone with aldehydes
Tetrahedron Letters, Volume 44, Issue 14, 31 March 2003, Pages 2991-2994
Subramanian Karur, Justin Hardin, Allan Headley, Guigen Li
The Morita–Baylis–Hillman (MBH)-type reaction of α?β unsaturated δ-lactones with various aldehydes has been achieved without the direct use of a Lewis base. The new MBH process can be conveniently carried out by the slow addition of the diethylaluminum iodide into the solution of lactone and aldehyde in dichloromethane at 0°C. Modest to good yields were obtained (50–65 %) for eight examples.

Behavior of arylvinylketones in zeolites: A systematic study
Applied Catalysis A: General, Volume 336, Issues 1-2, 1 March 2008, Pages 101-108

Graphical abstract

Arylvinylketones were efficiently converted to indanones through zeolite-promoted cyclization. The zeolite nature and the substitution pattern in the starting materials proved critical, the 2-substituted arylvinylketones reacting more readily in H-ZSM5, while the 3-substituted required H-USY. The characterization of rearranged product and solvent addition formed as side-products in a few cases offer insight into the mechanism, suggesting dicationic intermediates.

A one-pot procedure for the preparation, in good yields, of phosphinopeptides as building blocks for peptide synthesis in the field of new enzyme inhibitors is described. This method affords the possibility of variations for the substituents in α and β position to the phosphorus atom and in α position to the nitrogen atom.

An efficient, simple and expedition synthesis of 1-amidoalkyl-2-naphthols as ‘drug like’ molecules for biological screening
Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters, Volume 18, Issue 2, 15 January 2008, Pages 788-792
Hamid Reza Shaterian, Hossein Yarahmadi, Majid Ghashang

Graphical abstract

An efficient and direct protocol for the preparation of amidoalkyl naphthols employing a multi-component, one-pot condensation reaction of β-naphthol, aromatic aldehydes and acetamide in the presence of ferric hydrogensulfate under solvent, solvent-free and microwave conditions is described. The thermal solvent-free and microwave green procedures offer advantages such as shorter reaction times, simple work-up, excellent yield and recovery and reusability of catalyst. It is noteworthy that 1-amidomethyl-2-naphthols can be converted into important biological ‘drug like’ active 1-aminomethyl-2-naphthol derivatives by amide hydrolysis.
